Painting with light

There’s this style that is really hot right now in commercial photography. I first came across it while looking at Tim Tadder’s photos. I later found out it is also called the Dave Hill effect. Check out their websites to understand what I’m talking about.

There are many threads online of people trying to figure out how to emulate this style [1], [2] ,[3], [4]. Some say it’s HDR, some say just use the lucis art plugin. Somehow they can create this hyperreal scene either with 100% control of their lighting or heavy post production. Likely it’s a combination of both.

Anyways, this is my attempt. I create harsh highlights and shadows with two flashes. Used a RAW file so I had more bits to play with. Messed around with all the photoshop settings I could find, a couple adjustment layers later and voila. Dijana and Semantha:
